Green Bean Casserole

I've been an avid watcher of HGTV's Fixer Upper for some time now.  So logically, when the stars of the show put out their own magazine, I have to have it.  In addition to decorating tips, the premier issue of Magnolia Journal also includes several recipes.   Friday night, I tried my hand at Joanna Gaines' green bean casserole.  A definite meal improvement!  Here is my take on her recipe:

Green Bean Casserole
(serves 14)

2 lbs green beans, rinsed and trimmed
1/2 cup unsalted butter, divided
8 oz. mushrooms, sliced
1 Tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
2 Tablespoons minced garlic
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon dried onion
1 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 cup flour, divided
2 cups heavy cream
1 small onion, cut into rings

  1.  Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
  2. Boil green beans in salty water until crisp-tender, about 5 minutes. Drain and rinse with cold water.  Set aside.
  3. In a large skillet, melt 1/4 cup butter over medium heat.  Add mushrooms, Worcestershire sauce, garlic, salt, dried onion, and pepper.  Cook until mushrooms are tender, about 5 minutes.
  4. Stir in 1/4 cup flour until combined.
  5. Reduce heat and and add cream. Cook and stir until thick and bubbly, about 2 minutes.
  6. Add green beans and stir to coat.  Transfer into a baking dish.
  7. In a small bowl, combine onion rings and remaining 1/4 cup flour.
  8. In large skillet, melt remaining 1/4 cup butter. Add onion mixture and cook until onions are browned, about 5 minutes.
  9. Top green beans with onions and bake uncovered for 35 minutes.
Enjoy!
